thought of the day.163

Religious leaders empower themselves by proclaiming that “obedience” to God is the greatest good. In contrast, suggesting that “happiness” is the greatest good empowers others.

Obedience has never produced anything good, as far as I know. It is the rebels who changed the world for the better. Gallileo, Marie Curie (a woman SCIENTIST - shouldn't she be making dinner for her husband???), Ghandi, Gloria Steinem, Martin Luther King. All rebels who made the world a better place. The obedient ones came and went without a legacy. It is our RESPONSIBILITY to NOT BE OBEDIENT. I believe we all have a duty to fight for justice in our little corner; to fight for the little guy; to speak up when people are oppressed. We also have a responsibility to live according to a moral code that makes the world a better place. This means, to me, facilitating human fulfillment, and minimizing suffering, is the greatest accomplishment. Too often, obedience to christian doctrine causes untold suffering. We need to use discernment in our choices; not to blindly "obey", but to lead.
