This is so disgusting. I feel like I am constantly preparing for the possible upcoming battle with my bible literalist parents...talk about ammo...
Oh dear, dear, Janet! You mustn’t take those verses out of context...those were different times, surely you recognize that?! And besides, who are YOU to question God? God’s ways are not our ways. And you cannot possibly make moral judgments without God! God’s Word guides us and gives us strength to stand firm in the face of the godless, secular liberals who are destroying society with their demands for equal rights for women and homosexuals!
Now it is o.k. for you to doubt, for God loved you so much that he gave you free will. But don’t doubt too much or he will burn you in hell. But it won’t be Him that burns you in hell... you will go there of your own choosing by rejecting God’s grace and mercy.
Thanks for the heads up John! I'm meeting my parents for dinner 2nite, so I now know how the conversation with go :)
Oh boy! Dinner with the parents! Hope you are presented with an opportunity to share a little of your views. I think your kindly spirit is evident by your not wanting to hurt your parents but it’s terribly unfair to you that you can’t voice your heartfelt and well earned beliefs (You are a grown woman and not just their child anymore!) I certainly don’t want to cause irreparable harm and you obviously know the dynamics of the relationship far better than I but I just encourage you to be yourself. If they can’t respect that, then too bad for them.
My parents are elderly, and they are fragile both emotionally and physically. I actually believe that subconsciously this was a form of control - we cannot afford to tell the truth because it will kill them or they will go looney and end up in an institution (you think I kid? You think I exaggerate? I do not.) But in many ways they are good people and they have invested their whole lives in this belief. Their christianity is such a house of cards - I know I could blow it down with no effort at all. But I guess at this point, my voice will have to be anonymous online because my love for them is more important right now than telling the truth. But I am so very grateful for blogs like this. You probably notice that I don't participate much in the debate part - I mostly use it to vent! Muchas Gracias, or as we say here, "Much Grass".
I think you are very insightful recognizing the control that was/is going on. And you are right that at this point in their lives, it does little good to come out as an atheist to them. I would just say, for your own sake, don't sacrifice too much of yourself-of your own dignity-in your efforts to save them from hurt.
Hopefully the food will be so good the topic won't even come up!
