“To me, it seems easy to account for these ideas concerning gods and devils. They are a perfectly natural production. Man has created them all, and under the same circumstances would create them again. Man has not only created all these gods, but he has created them out of the materials by which he has been surrounded. Generally he has modeled them after himself, and has given them hands, heads, feet, eyes, ears. and organs of speech. Each nation made its gods and devils speak its language not only, but put in their mouths the same mistakes in history, geography, astronomy, and in all matters of fact, generally made by the people. No god was ever in advance of the nation that created him. The negroes represented their deities with black skins and curly hair. The Mongolian gave to his a yellow complexion and dark almond-shaped eyes. The Jews were not allowed to paint theirs, or we should have seen Jehovah with a full beard, an oval face, and an aquiline nose. Zeus was a perfect Greek, and Jove looked as though a member of the Roman senate. The gods of Egypt had the patient face and placid look of the loving people who made them. The gods of northern countries were represented warmly clad in robes of fur; those of the tropics were naked. The gods of India were often mounted upon elephants; those of some islanders were great swimmers, and the deities of the Arctic zone were passionately fond of whale's blubber. Nearly all people have carved or painted representations of their gods, and these representations were, by the lower classes, generally treated as the real gods, and to these images and idols they addressed prayers and offered sacrifice.”

Odd, isn't it? How so many millions of people through the ages could see the world around them and recognize that there must be SOME god or gods who had created the whole thing...and then our age comes along and some people decide they all must've been wrong and the world was an accident.

Your argument isn’t very strong. Millions—billions even—of people through the ages thought the world was flat. Thought the world was the center of the universe and the sun was pulled by a chariot around the earth. These ideas are absurd so why do you think their ideas about gods aren’t?

We learn about nature every day. Hubble is now peering back to almost the beginning of time with incredible clarity. Check out the latest National Geographic.

People didn’t just willy nilly “decide they all must’ve been wrong” they simply gathered more and more evidence until gods were no longer needed to explain the workings of nature.

I can predict what Hubble will find: a big bang, some sort of explosion at the beginning of time for which we still have no answer for where it came from. And some will speculate that we're planted here by aliens, and some will speculate that swirling mathematical points did it, and some will come up with some long science-y, intelligent sounding explanation for how in this one instance it really is possible for nothing to somehow accidentally produce something, and no one will really be any closer to a scientific explanation for how the world began.

Even if it ultimately proves impossible to know how the universe began, we get closer to a scientific explanation with every bit of new information and isn’t that an amazing thing? That a bunch of cells turned fish turned amphibians turned reptiles turned mammals have managed to survive and evolve and build instruments that allow us to peer back billions of years before even the earth existed? Mind-boggling!

Yup, absolutely wonderful how a bunch of accidents can do something ultimately without meaning. After all, any meaning attributed to it is only present in the accidents' hearts.
