“We have our hands, we have our brains, we have the challenge all around us, and we have within (from whatever source) the will to strive. That is enough; there is no need to assert 'belief' in that which we do not, as yet, know.”
~ Robert A. Heinlein, personal correspondence in 1956 with Warren Allen Smith, cited in Who's Who in Hell

I wonder if he would say that he "believes" this?
I think you would agree that there is no reason to believe that Santa Claus is anything more than a myth. Or that people who prayed to Zeus were misguided. Here the author is simply saying there is no more reason to believe that the gods prayed to today are any more real than Santa or Zeus. There may be gods worshipped 10,000 years from now but based on history, todays religions will be seen by those people as quaint myths.
It is always the best policy to accept ideas based on compelling evidence rather than because it may be a comforting story. Otherwise, you have countless people believing in Angels named Moroni, talking donkeys and that killing infidels in the name of Allah will get one a ticket to Paradise.
